Seeking Advice

I'm throwing this out to all you physicians in Malaysia as I haven't a clue to the answer.
Someone I know was diagnosed with sleep apnea and was told he needed to be on CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which is pretty standard treatment here.
Except he was quoted a price of RM 10,000.
And when he wanted his polysomnogram report, he was told it was "confidential information" and he cannot be given a copy.

My questions:
1) Does anyone know what these devices may cost (they cost about US$700 to 1200 here I believe) in Malaysia? I'm surprise by the cost quoted (public hospital, too!)
2) Isn't a patient's "confidential" medical records the property of the patient?? Here, we are not even legally allowed to refuse to share a patient's file with him if requested.

Would appreciate any info, thanks!

1) Unfortunately no idea what it costs. Respiratory physicians in Malaysia are a rare breed.
2) All investigations should be the property of the patient. Unfortunately many doctors in Malaysia (private and govt) are still way too paternalistic.

in britain it used to be that patients werent allowed access at all, they're considered hospital property however only in the recent years have patients been allowed their medical notes, but they still have to submit an application as to why they want access etc. ie it isn't very straightforward still.

no idea how much cpap costs but i know of a msian friend who sell medical equipments, who marks up prices up to three times the normal price.

At the end of the day might be cheaper to ship it over from the US! But one still needs the support.
Btw I shall post your query in the new Dobbs as well - have you received your invite? We used your hotmail address (might have gone into spam)

I've also emailed my old classmate Professor Abdullah Sani who might be able to help. He's into sleep apnea.

Thanks for the info everyone!
Palmdoc, I did receive the invite, thank you (it was timely as well since I forgot my old password :)
Will check out the Malaysia options though I did find out that any licensed US physician can prescribe a CPAP so I might go that route. The model I was looking at was $450 which is a lot cheaper than the initial estimate from Malaysia! I was told by the rep that with the auto-titrating models, specific pressure prescriptions are usually not necessary anymore. Though still ideal to have someone locally do the fitting and adjusting. But, considering the price difference of RM10,000 and RM 1400 for the set here, the next step seems pretty clear I think
